Eligibility Verification
Definition
Eligibility verification is the process of confirming, before an appointment, that a patient's dental coverage is active and what it will pay for.
Why it matters for the front desk
A full check covers more than active coverage: deductible and maximum remaining, coverage percentages, frequencies, waiting periods, and clauses such as missing tooth or downgrades. Done by phone or payer portal, it can take 20 to 40 minutes per patient. Skipping or rushing it leads to denied claims, inaccurate estimates and patients who are billed after the fact.
