D0120: Periodic Oral Evaluation
Definition
D0120 is the CDT code for a periodic oral evaluation of an established patient, the routine exam done at a recall visit.
Why it matters for the front desk
D0120 is one of the most billed codes in any practice, usually alongside a cleaning. Many plans cover two exams per benefit year, and some count D0120, D0140 and D0150 toward the same limit. If a patient had an emergency exam at another office earlier in the year, the recall exam may be denied. Checking the remaining exam count during eligibility verification, not after the visit, keeps the patient from receiving a surprise bill.
