D1120: Prophylaxis, Child
Definition
D1120 is the CDT code for a child's cleaning: removal of plaque, calculus and stains from the teeth and implants in the primary and transitional dentition.
Why it matters for the front desk
Most plans cover two child cleanings a year, but each plan sets its own age for switching from D1120 to the adult code, D1110. A teenager billed with the wrong code may be denied or paid at the wrong rate. Checking the plan's age rule, and the date of the last cleaning, during verification keeps children's recall claims from coming back, especially for families with several kids on one plan.
