D0274: Bitewings, Four Radiographic Images
Definition
D0274 is the CDT code for a set of four bitewing radiographic images, the x-rays that show the back teeth from crown to bone level.
Why it matters for the front desk
Bitewings are taken at most recall visits, and plans often limit them to once per 12 months or once per calendar year. Those are different rules: under "once per 12 months", a patient whose last set was 11 months ago isn't eligible yet, while "once per calendar year" resets on January 1. Recording the date of the last set during verification avoids denials for x-rays taken a few weeks too early.
