D2140: Amalgam, One Surface, Primary or Permanent
Definition
D2140 is the CDT code for a one surface amalgam (silver) filling on a primary or permanent tooth.
Why it matters for the front desk
Fewer practices place amalgam today, but D2140 still matters at the front desk because many plans use the amalgam fee as the benefit for back tooth composite fillings. When a plan downgrades a D2391 composite, the payment is based on the D2140 rate and the patient pays the difference. Knowing both fees lets the team explain a filling estimate clearly before treatment.
