D2740: Crown, Porcelain/Ceramic
Definition
D2740 is the CDT code for a crown made entirely of porcelain or ceramic material.
Why it matters for the front desk
Crowns are major services, so they usually fall under the plan's lowest coverage level, may have a waiting period, and often have a replacement limit of once every five years or more. Payers usually ask for a pre-op x-ray and sometimes a narrative explaining why a filling won't work. Some plans downgrade ceramic crowns on molars to a metal crown benefit. Sending a pretreatment estimate with the right attachments gives the patient a realistic cost before the prep appointment.
