D2391: Resin Based Composite, One Surface, Posterior
Definition
D2391 is the CDT code for a one surface tooth colored (composite) filling on a back tooth.
Why it matters for the front desk
CDT 2026 changed this code. It now applies regardless of how deep the lesion is, and D1352 (preventive resin restoration) was deleted, so those procedures are now reported as D2391. Many plans also downgrade posterior composites and pay them at the amalgam (silver filling) rate, leaving the difference to the patient. Explaining that downgrade before treatment prevents most billing complaints about fillings.
